The "German-Turkish Year of Research, Education and Innovation 2014"

2014 is the German-Turkish Year of Research, Education and Innovation, a joint initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology of the Republic of Turkey.

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research has been intensively promoting bilateral research projects and the exchange of scientists since 2007. One of the major players in this cooperation is the Turkish-German University in Istanbul, which took on its first students in the winter semester 2013/14. Another example of the great potential of German-Turkish cooperation, particularly within application-oriented research, is the German Turkish Advanced Research Center for Information and Communication Technologies in Berlin and Istanbul. These are good reasons to intensify cooperation.

Motto: "Science Bridging Nations"

For 2014, the Federal Minister of Education and Research, Prof. Johanna Wanka, and her Turkish counterpart the former Minister of Science, Industry and Technology, Nihat Ergün, have agreed to hold the German-Turkish Year of Research, Education and Innovation (see BMBF press release 18/10/13). "International Science Years are a successful tool within cooperation. I am delighted that Turkey is to be our partner in the Year of Science. Both countries benefit, due to both the bridge that Turkey provides between Europe and Asia and the many people of Turkish origin living in Germany", said Wanka.

The motto for the Year of Science is "Science Bridging Nations". For one year, Germany and Turkey pursue new lines of cooperation: the aim is to bring attention to the importance and successes of the cooperation between the two countries and to build on the existing cooperation within research, education and innovation through forward-looking projects – projects whose effects extend beyond the joint Year of Science. The two countries seek to use this Year of Science to tackle global and social challenges by researching solution strategies and their implementation using new technologies and innovations (For details see Objectives).

Joining forces, unleashing energy

The German-Turkish Year of Research, Education and Innovation 2014 addresses politics, economics, science and society. The initiative addresses research institutes, funding and intermediary organisations, scientists and students – and also research-intensive companies, apprentices, educational facilities and education providers. Naturally, the media, interest groups (associations etc.) and interested members of the public are also included in the joint Year of Science.

Cooperation at all levels brings together the strengths of Germany and Turkey, thus boosting the potential of both countries as locations for research and innovation.
